READ THE SHORT STORY:
Pg. 466- Ribbons:
• Much of the conflict in “Ribbons” centers around foot binding and Stacy’s lack of knowledge concerning the custom. Throughout history, people have engaged in various practices, including altering the body, to conform to culturally accepted standards of appearance. In certain African cultures, groups gradually elongate their necks by wearing stacks of metal rings or stretch their earlobes or tongues; pierced ears have long been considered attractive in many cultures; tattoos have often been deemed an improvement to appearance. Research one particular practice people have used to alter their appearance. Write an essay discussing the practice that people today might undergo for the sake of cultural standards of beauty.
Items to focus on when completing the assignment:
• Define a Need: Why do people feel a need to alter their appearance? Do all alterations have to be culturally related or are some for personal gratification?
• Seek Information on the Need: Pick one way that people in ours or other cultures alter their body to meet an appearance standard. Research the practice and complete a Pros and Cons chart. (to be included in your folder with the essay). Discuss all findings in your essay.
• Evaluate Effectiveness: Discuss, within your essay, how effective these alterations are to the recipients within their culture.
• Seek Opportunities for Leadership: Create a two (2) minute presentation where you either defend or go against your chosen practice.
All information must be kept relevant. Materials that you MUST have for turn in are:
• Folder- three prong, any color, name and period on front.
• Detailed Outline for your Graphic Organizer- A web chart will not be accepted. The research should be completed before you been the writing process. All information should already be present at the creation of your outline.
• Minimum of five paragraphs where you are thoroughly discussing the practice in which you have chosen.
• Pros and Cons Chart
• Reflection or Speech for your two (2) minutes presentation typed and printed.
